‘Gen V’ Star Asa Germann Cast As Angel In Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot After Testing For Cyclops

Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, comic book fans have waited eagerly to see how Marvel Studios would formally introduce mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While characters like Wolverine and Professor X have dropped in for multiverse cameos, the true dawn of mutantkind is finally taking shape on the big screen, bringing a whole new generation of gifted young performers into the superhero fold. Among the rising stars making waves across prestige genre television, ‘Gen V’ standout Asa Germann has quickly emerged as one of the most compelling talents to watch.

Speculation surrounding the upcoming ensemble has escalated rapidly in recent weeks, especially after major announcements began rolling out regarding who will lead Charles Xavier’s school. Helmed by ‘Thunderbolts*’ director Jake Schreier, the highly anticipated reboot will introduce a fresh generation of heroes and villains to navigate the fraught political tensions of mutant rights. With fan anticipation reaching a fever pitch, industry insiders have kept a close watch over every screen test and boardroom shortlist.

That search has now yielded another crucial founding member, as The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Asa Germann has officially landed the role of Warren Worthington III, better known to comic fans as Angel, in Marvel Studios’ upcoming ‘X-Men’. The casting expands an already star-studded roster as Marvel gears up to bring the heroic mutants into the modern franchise timeline. Germann will take flight as the winged hero, cementing his transition from the brutal satire of streaming television to Kevin Feige’s flagship franchise.

Interestingly, Germann’s path to the role came after an audition for an entirely different squad leader. The trade notes that the actor originally screen-tested for the part of Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, before that role ultimately went to Kit Connor. Rather than passing on Germann entirely, Feige and the creative team were reportedly so impressed by his audition tape that they quickly set him up with another pivotal hero from the team’s earliest days.

Created by legendary comic book icons Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, Warren Worthington III stands as one of the original five founding members of the team alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, and Iceman. Born into exorbitant wealth and high society, Warren is endowed with a pair of massive, feathered wings sprouting from his back that grant him the power of natural flight. His aristocratic background and personal struggle to hide his physiological mutation have long made him a fascinating emotional anchor within mutant lore.

Across comic book history, the character has navigated one of Marvel’s darkest trajectories, most notably when the ancient tyrant Apocalypse transformed him into the lethal, razor-winged Horseman of Death known as Archangel. On the big screen, the mutant previously made appearances played by Ben Foster in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and Ben Hardy in 2016’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. However, neither earlier installment gave the high-flying hero enough sustained room for dramatic development, leaving ample territory for Germann to reinvent the role.

Audiences will instantly recognize Germann from his standout portrayal of Sam Riordan in the Prime Video hit series ‘Gen V’, where he showcased a rare ability to blend violent physicality with vulnerable emotional depth. He also reprised that character in ‘The Boys’ and scored a role in ‘Scream 7’, proving his versatility across horror, action, and character-driven drama. That extensive stunt training and psychological nuance should serve him well as he steps into Warren’s complex shoes.

Germann joins an ambitious mutant ensemble featuring Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Written by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, Marvel Studios’ ‘X-Men’ is currently slated to land in movie theaters on May 5, 2028.
