Behind closed doors, production executives formulated an ambitious strategy to pivot the intellectual property onto premium cable with a revamped format.
That reinvention officially arrived with the premiere of ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ on Starz, taking the veteran sergeant’s career down an unfamiliar path. Rather than deploying with his trusted 20-Squad veterans, Hondo must assemble a probationary unit from scratch following a disastrous operation. Shemar Moore Returns to Anchor a Hardened Hondo
Leading the frontline once again is Shemar Moore, who reprises his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. while serving as executive producer. Set two years after the CBS finale, the new series finds Hondo in a darker headspace after weathering severe personal and occupational setbacks. Moore plays the veteran as an old-school leader who must constantly manage an unpredictable team handpicked to fail.
The New Recruits: Meet the Roster of 44-Squad
Stepping into the tactical unit as Jude Callan is Ronen Rubinstein, best known to television audiences for ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’. Callan serves as the squad’s unpredictable wildcard, bringing emotional baggage from controversial undercover assignments into high-pressure field entries. He is joined by Freddy Miyares of ‘When They See Us’, who portrays Ethan Cole, an analytical prodigy whose tactical genius is often undermined by social friction.
The squad also features Cassidy Reed, played by ‘La Brea’ standout Zyra Gorecki. Reed is a top-of-her-class academy graduate and amputee who adamantly refuses desk duty, fighting to prove her place on dangerous frontline breaches. Beside her stands Lucy Barrett of ‘Charmed’, portraying Samantha “Sammy” Bishop, an energetic former pageant contestant turned law enforcement media personality hailing from a generational police family.
Completing the rookie roster is Adain Bradley, known for his roles in ‘All American’ and ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’. Bradley portrays Malik Anderson, a charismatic former Marine from South Central Los Angeles whose military background clashes with his peers’ lack of discipline. Together, this quintet forms the probationary foundation that Hondo must rapidly turn into a functional operational unit before internal politics derail them.
Original Stars Return for Essential Cameos
While 44-Squad spotlights a fresh generation of performers, the series preserves foundational ties to its procedural history. Shortly after Deadline confirmed that Sony Pictures Television had ordered 10 episodes for the offshoot, key veterans were recruited to ease the transition. In the pilot episode, Jay Harrington reprises his role as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay alongside Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks to bring Hondo back into action.
The new direction initially proved bittersweet for longtime cast members who discovered the spinoff through public announcements rather than early studio briefings. Harrington admitted, “I’ve been in this business for a long time. You don’t get ‘owed’ things just because you put in your time,” when speaking exclusively to TVLine about the abrupt rollout. Later in the freshman season, David Lim also returns as Officer Victor Tan, granting dedicated fans a welcome connection to the original team.
A Grittier Style and Early Season 2 Renewal
Steered by showrunner Jason Ning, ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ replaces the glossy aesthetic of network television with a grounded tone inspired by classic urban procedurals. Demonstrating significant faith in the creative overhaul, Starz ordered Season 2 weeks ahead of the series premiere. With filming on the sophomore run scheduled for later this year, Hondo’s mission with his new recruits appears poised for sustained tactical success.
